Rules of the Wiener Dog Nationals
Sorry -- only those canines chosen to participate will be allowed
entrance anywhere on the property.
No Spectator Canines Allowed.
- Participating canines must be real dachshunds between the ages of 6 months to 10 years.
Registry is not required and there are no weight restrictions.
- Only those dachshunds chosen to race will be allowed access anywhere at The Woodlands.
No spectator canines will be allowed.
- All entrants will be required to show proof of current bordatella, distemper and rabies shots.
- Each participating dachshund will need to bring two (2) humans. Humans must be able to carry and/or catch the dog while standing/walking on a sandy surface (much like a beach). At least one of the humans must be able to walk and run approximately 110 yards on this sandy surface. One human will carry the racer to the Starting Box and "load" it, then run with the dog to the finish line where it will be caught by the second human.
- All humans will be required to sign a consent and waiver releasing The Woodlands from all liabilities and allowing The Woodlands to use their names and likenesses in promotional advertising.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, with the exception of the race itself.
- Wiener Dogs will be provided a racing blanket to identify them for the race. Track personnel will assist with making sure the blanket is secure yet non-binding.
- NO FOOD is allowed on the racetrack. The humans may coax their runner with a favorite chew toy, scarf, bell, etc. Nothing breakable or edible is allowed on the racing surface. No balloons, doggie treats, etc.
- Humans should not carry any loose articles onto the racetrack. Humans should wear comfortable running shoes. No flip-flops will be allowed. Only canines will be allowed to race barefoot.
- All participants must stay within the designated area while waiting their turn to race. At least one human must remain with the dog at all times. The designated area will be indoor and cooled. Water will be provided for both canines and humans. A designated grassy area will be available for the canines.
- Participating wiener dogs are not allowed trackside except for their individual race. At no time will a dachshund be allowed near the paddock area or on the apron while the greyhounds are present!
- Upon completion of the wiener dog race, all participants must return immediately to the designated area. A short interview of the winner and pictures will be done on the track. Return the racing blanket to track personnel.
- The winners of the eight qualifying heats will be asked to race in the finals at the end of the day. Please do not enter unless you are available for the entire day.
- REMEMBER: The only thing serious about this race is the FUN! Judge's decisions will be final. For the safety of everyone concerned the track reserves the right to refuse participation to humans who cannot meet all the qualifications of the race.
- These races will be held rain or shine!
